The Police Association remains concerned over the proposed "Victoria Police Bill" which Government is determined to introduce into the Spring 2005 Parliamentary Session.
The Association is scheduling urgent meetings with members across the State to provide you with an opportunity to hear about the proposed changes and how they will affect you and your family.
In the coming days we will highlight many of the areas with which the Association has taken issue, on your behalf, and which will be open for discussion in the course of the work place meetings to be held.
The Association is determined to resist these changes proposed by the Chief Commissioner and the Government, many of which would see our members treated as second class citizens.
Some of the matters discussed have been provided to us in draft format and we are informed that they will be the subject of consideration by the Minister for Police & Emergency Services, prior to ‘In Principle’ approval by Cabinet.
The first of these major issues is the Chief Commissioner’s proposal to remove full rights of appeal against non selection for transfer or promotion. This proposal would enable the Chief Commissioner to select a person for any position, without the knowledge that a full appeal process was available to an unsuccessful applicant.
Such a proposal provides for nepotism and cronyism and, in some cases, would effectively exclude certain applicants from selection.
The work place meetings will provide you with the opportunity to inform us of exactly what you think of these and other proposed changes.
