  • Proposed Changes to the Police Regulation Act: Your Rights Eroded 9

The Police Association has been informing members of the draconian proposals of the Chief Commissioner in relation to the ‘Victoria Police Bill’ which is envisaged will replace the ‘Police Regulation Act 1958,’ and which would provide the Chief Commissioner with unprecedented powers and see you treated as a second class citizen.

In addition to the powers sought by the Chief Commissioner is the oppressive and unfair provision currently contained in Section 86 AAA of the Police Regulation Act.

The use of this provision, never before activated, has been mooted by the force. This section allows for the Chief Commissioner to recover all monies paid in wages to a member who has been suspended with pay, should that member be found guilty of a criminal or discipline offence, or resign prior to the conclusion of criminal or disciplinary processes.

This provision was enacted by the Kennett Liberal Government but has been retained by the Bracks Labor Government – The Police Association wants it repealed.

Continuing work place meetings are being held and the unanimous voice of the membership to date is one of complete opposition to these unacceptable powers.

The Association is determined to further the aims of our members, and to resist the offensive changes proposed that would see our members treated as second class citizens, now and into the future.

SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING OF MEMBERS AND THEIR FAMILIES TO BE HELD AT 11.00 AM ON 7 AUGUST 2005 AT DALLAS BROOKS HALL.
