RALLY AGAINST SUPERANNUATION MERGER
11.00 AM SUNDAY, 25 SEPTEMBER
DALLAS BROOKS HALL
In a meeting on Wednesday morning regarding the proposed ESSS/GSO merger Finance Minister Lenders refused to provide the emergency services unions of detailed guarantees on the following issues;
- That ESSS would not be put at risk if merged with GSO
- That our members will not lose the current level of representation they currently enjoy with ESSS
- That our members' defined benefits scheme would not be closed off, or completely lost if a merger went ahead
- That Government would not commit to a common law Deed of Agreement that would protect our members' superannuation benefits if a merger went ahead
- That Government would not commit to a fully documented risk analysis of the merger proposal so that the full financial impact of a merger would be known
- That Government would not commit to a Memorandum of Understanding to protect service delivery of benefits for emergency services workers if a merger went ahead
At Wednesday's meeting the unions also outlined a proposal that would meet the Government's objective to achieve "administrative efficiencies" that would, at the same time, preserve the ESSS scheme as it is now.
The Minister went away to consult. Late yesterday the reply was that the Government would proceed with the merger. The merger proposal will go to Cabinet on Monday, 26 September 2005
It is therefore vitally important for Emergency Services workers to unite on Sunday and show the Government that we won't stand for this insulting and disrespectful proposal that puts our super at risk. Family members are welcome to attend as this affects them too.
