Association launches radio ads – “C’mon Mr Brumby and Police Minister Cameron, Save Our Streets!”Severe under-resourcing continues to be the number one issue facing members. Despite The Police Association drawing attention to these issues, the Force and the State Government have remained silent. To highlight the dangers of critical under-resourcing, The Police Association has today launched a series of radio commercials urging Premier Brumby and Police Minister Cameron to take action. Concerns about lack of police resources have always focused on the risk to community safety. Yet it is clear that severe resource shortages also seriously compromise the safety and wellbeing of members. As police, we have all sworn to protect the community, yet without the resources we need, we sometimes can’t even protect ourselves. Police are increasingly out-numbered against soaring levels of violent crime. The pressure of doing the job without proper resources means members are stressed, burnt-out and taking unnecessary risks to provide a basic level of service to the community. Despite this, the Brumby Government continues to spend less on police than any other state. It continues to stall on providing a proper audit of police numbers. And it continues to ignore the voice of police. We cannot continue to be put at risk because of lack of resources. Our radio ads will be broadcast during top rating programs on 3AW and Fox FM for the next two weeks. During this time, the Association will continue to consider the motions put forward by members during our recent round of post-rally meetings and push ahead with the next phase of the SOS – Save Our Streets campaign. |
