Crime stats laid bare

The Victorian Opposition yesterday made public the latest crime statistics that reveal an unacceptable increase in violent crime that is now at an all time high in Victoria

To our members who everyday come face to face with the growing tide of violence and crime on our streets, these latest statistics come as no surprise.

The latest crime figures expose the dangerous effects of critical under resourcing. Crimes such as assault, robbery and aggravated burglary that can be combated with a visible police presence, have surged as a result of inadequate frontline resourcing.

Now that the real crime figures are laid bare, without the usual fanfare or spin we have come to expect from the Government and Chief Commissioner when releasing annual crime statistics, the dangers of under resourcing can no longer be ignored.

More than ever, the State Government has a responsibility to take steps to ensure more police on our streets. The Government and the Chief Commissioner must heed the warning in the latest crime figures and commit to increasing police numbers and upholding the safety and wellbeing of the community and of our members.
