Chief Commissioner heeds our call on semi-autos

Today the Chief Commissioner announced that semi-automatic weapons will be implemented throughout the Victoria Police Force. Expressing her opposition to the weapons only last month, the Chief Commissioner has finally recognised the views of members and the demands of 21st century policing.

For the past four years, The Police Association, on behalf of its members has advocated the introduction of semi-automatics as a superior weapon. The implementation of semi-automatics is a welcome step forward in providing adequate and modern equipment to police in this state and upholding the highest standards of community safety.

The Police Association will ensure that this happens as soon as possible.

While the Association is pleased to see the introduction of semi-automatic weapons, we are still concerned that the Victoria Police Force refuses to introduce Tasers across the Force.

The Association will continue to fight for the introduction of Tasers so that members will have access to this modern and non-lethal option.

Resolutions calling for the timely introduction of semi-automatic weapons, the supply of Tasers and for action on resources were carried unanimously at a meeting of members at Moonee Valley Racecourse earlier today.

Member meetings will be held across the state until June 27 to discuss these and a number of other critical issues affecting police.  Check www.tpav.org.au for a member meeting near you.
