Public gets behind more police resources
The results of a recent Police Association survey into resources appeared in the Herald Sun today and confirmed our call for more police on our streets. The survey asked 400 Victorians a range of questions about public safety and the current level of police resources. The results overwhelmingly reinforce what members from around the state have been telling us day after day - there are simply not enough police on the front line to get the job done. § 74% said crime in § 79% said crime in the CBD has increased. § 58% said they felt unsafe or very unsafe in the city at night. § 54% said they felt unsafe in their local community at night. § 91% said there should be a more visible police presence. It is clear that the chronic lack of police resources is not only crippling members’ ability to do their job but is also impacting upon the public’s right to feel safe in their community. The good news is that the community is right behind us. 91% of respondents said they would support a campaign for more resources - now we have to show them how serious we are! Calls to the Chief Commissioner and the Minister of Police to take action over the resource shortage continue to fall of deaf ears. Our rally at Rod Laver on Tuesday 8 April followed by a march to Parliament House will be our opportunity to be heard - to send the message loud and clear that we will not tolerate the current state of severe under-resourcing and we will not allow our communities to feel unsafe. GIVE POLICE A CHANCE! The full results of the survey will be available shortly. Click HERE to read today’s Herald Sun article and editorial.
