Force to proceed with draconian Improper Associations PolicyAt a meeting today between representatives of The Police Association and the Victoria Police Force, the Association was advised that the Force intends to proceed with its draconian Improper Associations policy. This policy, which was a trigger for the unprecedented rally and march on Parliament House last month, displays a distinct lack of trust in members and contributes to an environment of punishment and fear. Whilst the Force has made minor adjustments to the policy, the Association remains seriously concerned about the adverse impact this policy will have on members and their families. The policy is unnecessary. It is disproportionate, divisive and indicates the Force’s complete lack of faith in members. For these reasons, the Association cannot, in good conscience, advise our members to sign the Improper Associations declaration. The Force’s objectives would be much better served through education and a reliance on existing legislation. The Association will continue to explore all available options, legal and otherwise before the policy’s proposed introduction on 31 May. We will provide further advice to members well before this policy is actioned. Assistant Secretary |
