PETITION CHECK LIST

Petitions are valid only when they are gathered according to certain rules and criteria. The Police Association has designed the petition and the campaign to meet these criteria. Here is a check list to make sure the signatures count:

  • Gather signatures only on the official forms supplied by The Police Association.
  • The reverse side of the form should be left blank.
  • All signatures must be handwritten.
  • Each person must include his or her name, signature and address only (must be a Victorian address).
  • The petition will ask for an email address, but this is not necessary for the signature to count.
  • An email address can also not be provided instead of a residential address.
  • Each person must be a Victorian resident.
  • The name and address must be legible.
  • Offer a leaflet to everyone who signs the petition. This will encourage them to take further action for our cause.
  • Send complete, signed petition sheets to:
The Police Association, C/O John East, DX: 21 0680

About the petition

The petition gives the public the chance to become directly involved in the SOS campaign.

The Police Association has proved it can be a powerful voice to achieve political objectives for its members. But the voice of the people is even stronger.

We know from our own research and from public opinion surveys that crime and community safety are near the top of the agenda for most Victorians. Our task is to funnel this community sentiment into a big wake-up call for the Brumby Government.

With members and the public getting behind the petition we have an opportunity to deliver a historic political message to Spring Street.

Our aim is to gather the largest petition ever presented to the Parliament of Victoria. To achieve this, we need 70,000 signatures from Victorian citizens. That is only seven signatures per member!

Members are in constant daily contact with the public and there are thousands of opportunities to ask people for their signatures.

The petition provides a focus for us to educate the public about why police resourcing is so important, how shortages are affecting our prime job of keeping communities safe and how the resourcing crisis is affecting their local communities. Pamphlets have been produced outlining the importance of the petition. These are available from The Police Association.

Here are some ideas of how you can gather signatures:

  • Walk though local shopping centres and strips; visit shops and ask staff and customers if they will sign the petition.
  • Set up a simple stall with a table and poster at points of heavy pedestrian traffic.
  • Target local sporting and other events where large numbers of people are gathering.
