What to Do and See on Phillip Island
Originally named Snapper Island by George Bass in 1798 and later being renamed Grant Island before its current name, it is an island of great diversity. Wide sandy beaches on the southern side of the island give way to rugged cliffs and interesting geological features such as Pyramid Rock, and The Blowhole at The Nobbies. The northern beaches are more protected from weather and offer calm and relaxing swimming for the family.
Despite being world famous for its Penguin Parade it is a place where many encounters with fauna will both surprise and delight. You may suddenly wonder as you take a dusk stroll along the southern beaches at the sudden dark cloud of mutton-birds that seem to appear from the ground itself. The island is also well known for its indigenous Koala population. The Koala Conservation Centre is dedicated to preserving this most endearing of native Australian animals. Given that Koalas are not easy to spot in their natural habitat, a boardwalk amongst the treetops guarantees success at finding them.
Phillip island is also home for one of the premier motor racing circuits in the country, and is famous for the annual Motor Cycle Grand Prix, featuring the World 500cc Championship.
There are many more attractions catering for visitors, including the Phillip Island Wildlife Park (Penguin Parade), Seal Rocks, A Maze'n Things, The Maritime Museum at Rhyll, Conservation Hill Reserve, The Heritage Centre, Grumpy's Crazy Golf, and the Australian Dairy Centre near Newhaven.
